Analysis of IP addresses

From 12th March 2006 to 4th March 2007, around 58,000 distinct IP addressessuccessfully fetched nearly 2 million elements from www.euron.org, of which 464,000 were actual pages and many of the rest pictures.

Analysing the IPs from which these requests come allows us to see roughly which countries use www.euron.org most. Note that this analysis cannot be completely accurate, since not all IP addresses have a specific geographical location.

In the picture, the inner ring shows total fetches, the outer ring shows distinct IP addresses. Only the top 20 countries (by total fetches) are identified, others are put together in the "rest of the world" category. "Unclassified" means that the IP address does not have a geographical location associated with it.

Comments


  • American IPs account for about a quarter of the fetches.
  • Germany, Italy, UK and Spain account for another quarter.
  • "Unclassified" addresses form a much higher proportion of "total fetches" than of "distinct IPs", suggesting that bot and crawler requests come from unclassified IPs.
  • The "rest of the world" proportion increases when you look at unique IPs, suggesting that many different people worldwide look casually at the site.
  • Denmark goes down from ranking 10 to 22 when considering distinct IPs, probably because I access the site so much!
  • By contrast, Asian countries and Iran are much higher on the "distinct" list, indicating that many separate addresses are using the site from these countries.
