Robotics and Automation Magazine

December 2003

In the June issue, Henrik Christensen and Bruno Siciliano reported on the European Robotics Research Network (EURON) activities aiming at helping towards integration of the research community in Europe. This debuting column is primarily meant to inform the worldwide Robotics & Automation community on relevant affairs from Europe. Parties interested in promoting certain activities via this column can contact either Kostas Kyriakopoulos ( http://users.ntua.gr/kkyria, ) or Bruno Siciliano ( http://wpage.unina.it/sicilian, ).

Traditionally, a number of short schools, courses and workshops take place in Europe every summer. The combination of exposure to the state of the art of research by worldwide known authorities and extracurricular activities serves as an exciting cultural and intellectual experience for young researchers. During this past summer a number of such activities took place with themes on:

  • "Neuroengineering", June 16-20, (Univ. of Genova) Venice, Italy
  • "Modeling & Control of Complex Dynamical Systems", July 6-12 2003, Univ. of Bologna, Italy
  • "Visualizing Multidimesional Geometry & applications", July 14-16, Univ. of Verona, Italy
  • "Embedded Systems 2003, ESSES'03", July 14 –Oct. 10, Vasteras, Sweden
  • "Robot Motion Planning", July 17-19, Univ. of Verona, Italy
  • "Cognitive Vision", Aug. 25-29, (ECVision Network), Bonn, Germany
  • "Surgical Robotics", Sep. 6-13, Pôle Universitaire Européen de Montpellier & LIRMM, France
  • "Multimodal Human Robot Interaction", Sep. 7-13, Univ. of Hamburg, Germany
  • "Online & Internet Robots", Sep. 15-19, Jaume I Univ., Spain

The next EURON meeting will take place in Amsterdam, Netherlands and is scheduled immediately after "IAS-8: 8th Conference on Intelligent Autonomous Systems", March 10-13, 2004, (http://www.ias8.org). More to come in the EURON home page (http://www.euron.org.

Getting Involved

We hope that you will get involved in many of EURON's activities and encourage others to do so as well.

Attend Meetings

Attending meetings is an excellent way of making contacts and friends within the community. These contacts are normally interesting, and may also be useful!

EURON Schools are aimed at PhD students so are particularly good for people wishing to deepen an already existing interest. [More details ... ]

Contribute to the Initiatives

Your knowledge and resources are valuable -- please consider sharing them with others by adding items to the databases, contributing your opinions to the roadmap and benchmarking initiatives, and your information to this website.

Especially, please contribute to the Video Collection for Students asap.

Use the Resources

Make use of the resources that EURON offers. Much of the information is freely available to all, but for other resources you have to be a EURON member. Apply for the grants, use the databases and the contacts, apply for the awards, use the mailing lists.
